Hillclimbs

Type of Event - Speed, Competitive
Type of Surface - Gravel/Sealed
Form of Motorsport - Basic, Clubsport

Hillclimbs are called 'speed' events. A hillclimb has a gradient that travels uphill and the cars compete on the track one at a time.
The road surfaces are usually gravel or sealed. And the roads are public roads. Speeds are governed by the tightness of the road, some events have a low average speed, while others are flat out.
Hillclimbs are relatively short pieces of road, usually no greater than 4kms. The advantage of a hill climb over other speed events, is that the margin for error is decreased as vehicles travel uphill, therefore braking distances are decreased as drivers have gravity to help slow down the cars.
Usually all the competitor drive along the course together at road speed (Tiki Tour) to have a look at the course. Occasionally the drivers may have a timed practice run. On most events however, a Tiki tour followed by three timed runs is standard. The fastest time for each competitor is the overall result.
The standard of car changes for speed events.
The minimum is a vehicle with a roll cage, full safety belts, helmet, fire extinguisher, fire proof overalls and a log book for the vehicle.
These events are great to spectate at, as you get to view vehicles traveling impressive speeds up some narrow challenging roads.
