Type of Event - Non speed, competitive
Type of Road - Open public roads
Form of Motorsport - Clubsport, Basic

Car trials are the most basic form of motor sport event that the Marlborough Car Club (MCC) holds. However 'basic' does not mean it is easy.
A Car Trial is a non speed event that takes place on open public roads using any car that is legal to drive on the road.
The idea of the event is to navigate a crew from one location to another location, while following a specific road route with instructions given in the form of a road book.
The crew consists of a minimum of two persons and a car.
The first person is the driver, they are responsible from driving the vehicle on the route specified by the navigator.
The second person is the navigator, they are responsible for reading the instructions given in a road book, and directing the driver turn by turn.
There may also be a third crew member who may take on some of the duties of the navigator, e.g. timing.
The crew may be required to write down words or codes on the side of the road as they progress to prove that they completed the course in the correct way.
The crew who navigate from the start to the finish, following exactly the specified route , while traveling at the most accurate average speed (outlined in the road book) and accrue the least amount of penalty points are the winners.
Equipment required is a stopwatch, paper, pen, a calculator, a car with a trip meter that can be reset and a sense of direction (if not humour).
