Rally Sprint

Type of Event - Speed, competitive
Surface of Road - Gravel/Sealed Tarmac
Form of Motorsport - Clubsport, Advanced

Rallysprints are for vehicles prepared for rallies. And therefore the event is organised very much like a rally, with drivers competing on the stage at one minute intervals. There can be many cars on the road, competing all at the same time.
Each year the MCC organises the Taylor Pass Rally Sprint, which is a piece of run, approx. 9km long run to the south of Blenheim in between the Wairau Valley and the Awatere Valley.
The rally sprint starts off along the base of the valley, traveling through two water fords, before traveling uphill through a narrow section of road. Once over the summit, it’s a fast blast down a technical piece of road, to the finish. The cars then turn around and compete in the opposite direction.
If a vehicle on the stage slows down or has a mechanical fault or has a crash, the car behind may pass or overtake that vehicle in front. However the overtaking car has to ensure that a crashed vehicle is OK before proceeding.
The competitors will complete three runs in each direction, with six runs in total during the day. The fastest time in each direction counts towards the overall time.
Again, safety is of prime concern, and vehicles are required to have a roll cage, full safety belts etc., as well as a full a safety triangle to warn vehicles on the road about safety problems.
It is compulsory to have a driver and a co-driver for a rally sprint. The co-drivers role is to navigate the driver through the different hazards and turns at junctions that may be required. The co-driver is also required to time the car, and keep track of the required paperwork involved in competing at a Rally Sprint.
